The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic fraternal service organization. Founded in the United States in 1882, it is named in honor of Christopher Columbus.[1]

There are more than 1.8 million members in 15,000 councils, with nearly 200 councils on college campuses. Membership is limited to "practical Catholic" men aged 18 or older.[2]

Councils have been chartered in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Guatemala, Panama, Dominican Republic, the Philippines, Guam, Spain, Japan, Cuba, and most recently in Poland. The Knights' official junior organization, the Columbian Squires, has over 5,000 Circles. All the Order's ceremonials and business meetings are restricted to members, though all other events are open to the public. A promise not to reveal any details of the ceremonials except to an equally qualified Knight is required to ensure their impact and meaning for new members; an additional clause subordinates the promise to that Knight's civil and religious duties.

In the 2009 fraternal year, the Order gave over US$151 million directly to charity (over $1.367 billion in charitable contributions in the last 10 years) and performed over 69 million man hours of voluntary service. Over 413,000 pints of blood were collected. For their support for the Church and local communities, as well as for their philanthropic efforts, the Order often refers to itself as the "strong right arm of the Church" .[3] The Order's insurance program has more than $70 billion of life insurance policies in force, backed up by $14 billion in assets, and holds the highest insurance ratings given by A. M. Best, Standard & Poor's, and the Insurance Marketplace Standards Association.[4]

Service and Business Postings for Knights:

A note from Brother Chris Graham:

Tim,

If the brothers will go to the website (www.kofc185.com) and link to the MEMBERSHIP page they will see a further link to a template for job posting that I put together and Charlie reviewed. This is for Council 185 Knights to complete if they want to offer goods and services to the community. I put a disclaimer at the bottom to try and assure the Council was not held liable for quality of goods and services. Also it's important people contact the Knight directly verses sending emails to the Web site.

We have two deadlines. End of Feb. and Sept. for postings. This is to allow Charlie to just have to post 2X's per year.

Thanks,

Chris

Additional Creche Thank You

A note from Brother Rick Scinto:

Dear Tim,

I want to also say thanks to all who helped with the disassembly of the creche on Saturday morning. The takedown went like a breeze and not a straw was left after it was said and done. It goes to show that many hands do indeed make light work. Special thanks to the basement crew who stowed all the gear away- I'm sure that Msgr will be happy that it went away in a safe and orderly fashion.

I do want to lift up one member of Saturday's crew in special praise. Everytime I saw Timothy Moore, son of brother Steve, he had a broom in his hand and a smile on his face. Tim also helped with the assembly back in December so he pulled double duty. Great job Tim, and many thanks.

It's always a pleasure working with the Knights of Virgilius 185-

See you all next year!

Vivat Jesus,

Rick

Thanks to all and I hope to see you Saturday night,

TR
